Self-Delusion can blind us of the things that are most important: Self-delusion is something that a person believes so deep that it blinds them of the things that are around them. Mrs. Fox’s son Asbury in “The Enduring Chill,” and Sethe in “Beloved,” are two characters that get so caught up in the delusions of their self that they lose sight of the reality in their lives. In the short story “The Enduring Chill,” Asbury Fox is obviously at absolute dependence to his mother. He is maternally dependant and has no sense of self.
