In her book, West of Everything, Jane Tompkins states that westerns have “codified and sanctioned the way several generations of men have behaved verbally toward women in American society” (59). Have westerns had an effect on how men treat women or do they just further illustrate the way that things were in times past? I want to look at how Tompkins goes about making her case to us the readers, and whether or not she chooses an effective way to do so.
