In John Milton’s Paradise Lost, Satan is the most complex character throughout the entire epic . As the story opens Milton explains Lucifer, bringer of light, and his plight from Heaven. When the angel falls from Heaven he becomes more commonly known as Satan, a brilliant and certainly not coincidental choice as the name Satan means “enemy”, and Satan is without question, the ultimate enemy of God.
Satan’s complexity is well articulated by Milton. Throughout the poem, the reader finds him/herself having mixed emotions for Satan and sometimes even feeling pity for the fallen creature.
