I shall begin with the question as to why Howarth wrote this book. In the initial pages he states that he wants to write a book, which tells this story from the point of view of the common person living in England, Normandy, and Scandinavia at the time. He also declares that it is his desire that it not be read as a scholarly work, but rather want to evoke the emotions felt by the people with whom the story is concerned. (7 & 8) I believe that to a great extent that he succeeded in this goal. But why was this important to him? I believe that in writing a less formal history he has made the historical information accessible to a wider audience.
