The site of an explosion in a chemicals factory on December 2, 1984, Bhopal, India was the site of the worst industrial accident the world had ever seen. It is estimated that approximately 3,000 people died at the time of the Bhopal explosion and approximately 200,000 injured. Many thousands were permanently disabled following exposure to a poisonous cloud of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas. MIC is a highly toxic and unstable substance that was being used in the production of a pesticide known as SEVIN (carbaryl), which is itself a stable and relatively safe product.
