The modern world revolves around external appearances. Actions are chosen by the degree in which they impress others. People are no longer concerned with what is right, but rather with what “looks good.” Our pop culture has taught us that image is everything – sincerity and truth are not advised if one wishes to succeed. The “devout” worshippers that Baal Shem Tov encountered in the first two synagogues were also selling their image. These pious people, praying on their knees in front of everyone, were actually undedicated in their hearts.
