I had planned to tender my resignation in August, so my boss could have me replaced, then fly to the US on October 1st. The problem I now faced was this: if I gave my boss notice before September 15th, I would lose the bonus, as that is the rule at Dresdner. Also, employees are required to give one month’s notice before resigning, so I would in effect be breaching my employment contract by giving notice after the bonus had been paid, but employment contract breaches are typically not enforceable in China. I could not delay my departure date, because Lummis needed me to be in New Jersey that week as part of a priority software development project team. I
