William I or William the Conqueror lived in 1027 to 1087, and was king of England during 1066 to1087. Earnest and resourceful, William was not only one of the greatest of English monarchs but a pivotal figure in European history as well (William of Normandy).
Born in Falaise, France William of Normandy was brought up by Robert, Duke of Normandy and Herleva, daughter of a tanner of Falaise. At the age of seven, William’s father set out on a pilgrimage to the holy land, before leaving he presented this child to the nobles demanding there allegiance. “He is little”, his father said, “but will grow and if God pleases he will mend (William I).” As a young boy William was full of clean life and much natural piety.
