St. Francis de Sales was born into a noble family in 1567. He attended a Jesuit school in Paris where he was taught, Hebrew, Greek, law, humanities, and of course the Jesuit tradition of discipline. In 1591 he was ordained priest and soon after in 1602 became the bishop of Geneva. He has been revered, as the master of metaphor because he describes spiritual matters in a series of easily understood metaphors. However more importantly, due to is influence over the Church he has been referred to as one of the “doctors of the Western Church.” In his book “Introduction to the Devout Life”, he gives an exceptional understanding of devotion for beginners in spirituality.
