Ban of Alcohol in Kana, Nigeria
|
In May of 1999, The Federal Republic of Nigeria switched from a military to civilian ruled government. Three law systems were implemented which are known as the English common law, traditional law, and the Sharia law. The first two are similar to western countries such as the United States, but the Sharia law is a term many may have never heard of. It is only used by a few countries within their society, most of which are Muslim majority. One such country is Nigeria, which is approximately 50% Muslim. The Sharia law is not based off the Quaran but rather Quaran inspired. Calling the Sharia “law” can be misleading, as Sharia extends beyond law. Sharia is the totality of religious, political, social, domestic and private life (Kjeilen).
