August Wilson, in Fences, presents us with characters that represent the dreams of many people during their time. These characters are shown to have depth beyond their superficial actions. Troy Maxson is a very complicated character who acts in ways that hint at insanity. His demeanor throughout the play must be extracted from his actions and speech, because the reader gets no further insights into his mind. When seen on stage, the actor interprets this demeanor and expresses aspects of the character that may not have existed in the mind of the reader.
