Bauhaus Staircase: A Social Reflection.

This essay will consider two paintings, one from the 1930’s and one from the 1980’s. These paintings are in some ways very similar, yet, through differences in technique, colour and tone reveal themselves to be firmly situated in the different eras in which they were painted. They therefore reveal the changes that have taken place both in art and society over this period. Both images are memorable but is one more successful than the other? Are the formal aspects - the artist’s distribution of shapes and colours as well as his technique - more important than his subject matter in determining its success as a memorable image?
