Ø In human beings the throat is identified as the front portion of the neck. Within the neck the throat is known as the pharynx. It begins at the rear of the nasal cavity and of the mouth and continues to the epiglottis, a flap of tissue that covers the air passage to the lungs and that channels food to the esophagus. Relatively straight muscular tube through which food passes from the pharynx to the stomach. The esophagus can contract or expand to allow for the passage of food. From the mouth the food is swallowed into a transport tube, named the esophagus, or gullet. A flap called the epiglottis closes the windpipe while food is being swallowed.
