In the story “The Guest” by Albert Camus, irony is used to develop the theme that we are all ultimately alone with our decisions which is, in fact, the best way to live life. Camus chose the Algerian desert to escape the pressures of urban life. This desert scene he created shows the reader how someone can still be content with very little, even in the worst conditions like the poverty in the desert. Daru who is the protagonist in the story is quite a philanthropist and helps many people in the village. The life that Daru leads is quite simple, but he is still happy with the path his life is traveling through.
