Before the Marco Island Marriott Resort, Golf Club, and Spa was built in 1971, Deltona Corporation, the developer of Marco Island, would fly prospective purchasers to a landing strip which is presently South Collier Boulevard.
The hotel officially opened in December of 1972. The hotel had just one tower, twenty additional villas, and a conference center located where the present North Tower is located. The rooms totaled just 510. Before the San Marco Catholic Church was built, the conference center was used for religious services.
Marriott purchased the hotel for $37 million cash from the Deltona Corporation on May 1, 1979 and just one month later sold it to the present day owners, Massachusetts Mutual Insurance Company for $42 mil
