John Keats: a brief biography
|
John Keats was born October 31, 1795. He was the son of a livery-stable manager and received little formal education. In 1804, at the age of eight, his father died. His mother remarried almost immediately, but her marriage was doomed to failure. When his mother’s second marriage broke up she took John and his siblings (Fanny, George and Tom) to live with their grandmother at Edmonton, Middlesex.
John’s life at Edmonton was the most stable period he would have during his short life. He attended school at Enfield, two miles from his home. The Headmaster’s son, Charles Cowden Clarke, became a mentor to the young Keats and encouraged his early literary aspirations.
