Spanish-American War
Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines made up the last of the Spanish Empire and there was much rebellion in Cuba. Cuban exiles in the U.S. brought weapons back into Cuba from Florida which encouraged the rebellion. The Spanish Military controlled the cities of Santiago and Havana peacefully during the day, but the night presented cruel punishment from the Cubans. The Cuban rebellion caught the attention of the Americans through “The Yellow Press” which escalated to a war with the Spanish.
