The effect racism had on the black and white population in the 1930’s is strongly portrayed in the novel “Native Son” by Richard Wright. Racism in one form or another is the basis for resentment, oppression, and anger towards each other’s race. Bigger represents the oppressed but rebellious black person. The Daltons represent the sympathetic family, but still treats blacks and immigrants as servants. Jan and Max represent the oppressed communists trying to convert the world into their way of thinking. The difference between the blacks and whites will become evident as the novel progresses.
