The initial conflict in the tragedy “Oedipus the King” is when a plague falls upon the city of Thebes. As different prophesies and truths are exposed, the true conflicts surface. The true conflicts Oedipus faces are those of fate and his character, both of which he has fallen victim to. Oedipus was a victim of his character and a victim of fate due to the inner conflict he experienced throughout the play.
