Catullus and the Neoterics
|
The topic I have chosen to write about is Catullus (84-54 B.C.) and the Neoterics. I am interested in the way that they departed from the conventions of Roman poetry and scandalized the rich and powerful Roman elite. In so doing they helped to create something uniquely Roman. Among Greek poets one would be hard pressed to find one equal to Catullus in charm, wit, and concision. It is for this reason I have chosen Catullus as a representative of the Neoterics. In this paper I will briefly describe traditional Roman poetry, how the Neoterics represent a radical change, and give examples from the works of Catullus.
In order to point out how the Neoterics departed from tradition we must first examine the tradition. Up until the 2nd century B.C
