In the puritan belief structure, the persons wants are eliminated in their service to God. The set-up of puritan society was to make people as perfect as possible to better serve God and if their wants and needs were extinguished then so be it. A hierarchy was established in all Puritan cultures that included God, the Preachers, and the People. The Preacher had the biggest influence in the entire Puritan era though. The Preachers were the ones who would tell the people how they had to act and used the concept of serving God as justification for their laws. In most cases though, to best “serve God” people were deemed unnecessary other than the purpose of making God happier and anything they want was merely selfishness on their part.
