Buddhism is a major religion in today’s world. It is based on the teachings and writings of
Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Buddha, or the Enlightened One. Buddha rejected
important parts of the Hindu religion, but he also questioned the authority of the
priesthood. He denied the teachings about the Vedic scriptures. Most importantly, he let
all castes join his religious movement and denied that a person’s spiritual value is based on
a matter of birth.
“Buddha” is a title and not a name. “Buddha” means “one who is awake”, or in
other words, “a person who is woken up to reality”. Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) never
said that he was a god and has never been called one by Buddhists. He was a human being
who became Enlightened.
