Nothing illustrates better the modern blasé attitude towards photography as a tool of the state and an instrument of power than the impatient wait for our ‘four minute’ passport photos from those pokey little booths which pop up at regular intervals in bus and coach stations across the country. Which disgorge images of ourselves which appear drunk, hungover or downright criminal, the passport photo has become a running joke.
