Gestalt Theory

The Gestalt Theory first originated in the early 1900’s by three German psychologists, Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Kohler, and Kurt Koffka. The word “gestalt” comes from the German language, meaning whole. Initially the psychologists studied the illusion of flashing lights, and how the light would appear to move. They later called this the phi phenomenon; also known as apparent motion. With this discovery they believed that a previous theory called Structuralism could not explain the illusion. Wertheimer believed that the perceptual experiences, such as the moving lights, resulted from the analyzing a “whole pattern”, or in German, a Gestalt.
