Franz Joseph Haydn was born in the small village of Rohrau in Austria on March thirty-first 1732. His father was a wagon repairer as well as a minor town official. The Haydns were a music loving family. Haydn showed such great musical talent that at the age of six he was sent to live and study with a cousin of his fathers, a choirmaster. Haydn learned to play the violin, harpsichord and, on Sundays, sang in the church choir.
At the age of eight, the music director of St. Stephen’s church in Vienna heard Haydn’s lovely singing voice. The director then took Haydn back to Vienna with him to sing in the church choir. Haydn attended the church school as well as studying Harmony and Counterpoint.
