October 22, 1986 29 employees of New England Telephone Company (NET) walked off their job to protest the return of a co worker (Paul Cronan) with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
Cronans return to the worksite resulted from a lawsuit settlement reached by NET and Cronan consisting of a claim that NET had violated his right to privacy; discriminated against him based on his handicap, AIDS.
Cronan had worked for NET in various capacities since June of 1973. For the first six months of 1985 he was ill on and off with symptoms of AIDS related complex (ARC).
