Dear Thomas Jefferson,
As you know we have been traveling on our expedition to explore the United States. As we have been traveling we have encountered land occupied by Native Americans. We came in contact with nearly 50 American tribes. As we kept meeting with more and more tribes we developed a ritual when meeting a tribe for the first time. We would explain to the tribal leaders that their land now belonged to the United States, and that a man far in the east – President Thomas Jefferson – was our new “great father.” We would also give the Indians a peace medal with Jefferson on one side and two hands clasping on the other, we would often trade goods with them.
