In April 1952 the freeze of licenses was lifted and a 70-channel UHF band was added. During this decade, television became the dominant mass medium. The networks reached from coast-to-coast. Television was found in more than 50% of American households. While radio was facing difficulties in the 1950’s, television was experiencing a period of rapid development in the number of stations, size of audience, and in annual network and station revenues. More than 450 new stations came on the air. As of 1954 there were only two educational TV stations.
