Critical vs Pragmatic: Media's role in society today.

When exploring the theories behind the media’s role in everyday life, two traditions are presented. The ‘critical’ or European Tradition based on Marxist principles is ‘heavily interpretive,’ (Sinclair, 2002:23) and holds a macro perspective and the ‘pragmatic’ or American Tradition in contrast which is ‘strongly empirical,’ (Sinclair, 2002:23) holding a micro perspective. Although both ask similar questions, the approaches grant different emphasis to the various aspects of mass media. The functionalist understanding of society based on the Consensus theory of shared values creates the framework of the pragmatic approach.
