The war affected the economies of the North and South in different ways. The South suffered terribly. Invading Unions armies destroyed crops and cut railroad lines, interfering with food shipments to cities and army camps.
The worst blow to the southern economy was the success of the Union blockade, which prevented the south from importing manufactured goods. Most confederate industries lacked the capital and skilled workers to fill the needs of the army of civilians in a long war.
