The First Amendment of the Constitution protects the freedom of speech. Though it is written word for word, the word speech is not interpreted only in the vocal sense but in the symbolic sense as well. Because it is interpreted this way the Supreme continues to rule over issues of what kinds of actions are symbolic speech protected by the First Amendment and what kinds of actions are outside of this protection. Flag burning is quite possibly the most controversial issue that the Supreme Court has ruled is protected by the First Amendment on numerous occasions.
