Franz Joseph Haydn was born in Vienna, Austria in 1732. His family was not
wealthy and lived very conservatively. His father was a wagon maker and he was raised as a peasant. By age 5, he had shown so much musical ability that his parents gave him to a Hainburg Schoolmaster named Franck. Franck taught him the basics of music and at age 8 he went to Vienna as a choirboy at St. Stephen’s. When Haydn reached the age of 17, his voice changed and then lived in poverty as a teacher and accompanist.
Haydn lived in seclusion and has said that was a benefit to him. “There was no one near to confuse me, so I was forced to become original”. (Rosen) He is considered the father of modern music. Haydn was known as “Papa” by the orchestra
