When, if ever, did paganism cease to be a problem for the Anglo-Saxon Church?
Paganism pesters Christianity with “problems” quite a bit during the years 410-1066. However, it is difficult to determine how extensive and damaging these problems were for the early Church in England. A harder task to resolve is establishing a set date for when these problems cease to be. Depending on which historian’s theory you accept, that date can be anywhere within a two-hundred and fifty year gap. The first attempt to stop pagan worship in Anglo-Saxon England came from king Eoconberht, who in 640 ‘was the first English king to order pagan worship to cease and all idols be destroyed’ (Yorke, 162)
