“it is just what a Carnegie winner should be : quite simply outstanding…” This quotation from “The Independent” accurately describes the truly fascinating novel ‘Dear Nobody’ by Berlie Doherty. The novel explores the lifestyle of 17 yr old Helen Garton and how her unplanned pregnancy changed her from a carefree teenager to a single mother. Although the novel is primarily written from her boyfriend Chris’ perspective, the reader is allowed an insight into Helen’s inner feelings through the use of letters written by her to the unborn child – her ‘Little Nobody’. We marvel as we journey with her as she explores the trauma and emotional turmoil of having a child.
