During the early part of the 20th Century, American Drama wasn’t a large part of American society or taken very seriously. It seemed that early playwrights didn’t remain popular for long however, by the end of the century there was a long list of American dramatists.
American Drama is often thought of in terms of musicals or musical comedy which is true to an extent with many plays representing American society in this way. More serious American drama represents American society on a deeper, more intellectual level. These plays must be put in their social, historical and cultural contexts when studying them in order to understand how the writer used his or her play to shape or effect the society it was written in.
