Paul Cronan worked for New England Telephone Company (NET) since 1973 when in 1983 he was promoted to service technician. In 1985, after being transferred to South Boston, he began to suffer from AIDS-related complex (ACR). Upon his third request for time-off to see his doctor, Cronan’s supervisor, Charles O’Brian, indicated that he needed to know why Cronan was requesting the time off. Cronan disclosed the nature of his illness and O’Brian indicated that it would be kept confidential.
