Unlike many inventions where one knows who, where and when it was invented, there are different versions about how the microscope originated.
The first signs of the use of the microscope were in Ancient-Greco-Roman times. The earliest records of the optical lens dates back to the late thirteenth century and early fourteenth century, when spectacles came into use in Europe. It may also have been the Romans and engravers (men who would cut into any hard substance like stone, metal or wood) that unknowingly began the microscope revolution. They made a simple microscope (magnifying glass) out of rock crystals or glass globes filled with water over 3000 years ago.
