In a selection called “A Critique of Utilitarianism”, Bernard Williams discusses an argument against act-utilitarianism based on two examples. Williams states that, “…utilitarianism violates personal integrity by commanding that we violate those principles that are central and deepest in our lives (Pojman 168).” When sane moral beliefs are held by an individual they need to be taken into account even when they oppose the outcome favored by act-utilitarianism.
