The election of 1856 had a new party, fighting over the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and resentment for certain people. It came at a time when there were only three unified institutions: the Roman Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church, and Democratic Party,1 but even two of the three would experience some hard times. This election was the first time that there were the Democratic and Republican parties. The demise of the Whig Party and transformation of its remnants along with the Free Soil Party led to the rise of the Republican Party2 who proved to have a great first showing.
