When Christopher Columbus landed in Cuba in 1492 he said, “This is the most beautiful land seen by human eyes” (Eire 25). The Republic of Cuba is the most western island in the West Indies. It is located between North and South America and lies in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. It is approximately 90 miles from the Florida coast. The current lead, Fidel Castro, took control of Cuba in the revolution of 1959 and in 1961 it became a communist country. Before Castro took over it was the wealthiest island in the Caribbean. The islands economic standing fell to a low but in recent years has began to rise. The natural and human resources, demographics, society, and economy are issues that are discussed in the following paragraph
