The most memorable intercultural experience I had was in 1984 at David’s Bridal Salon, I was 18 years of age. Mirta a seamtress by trade is Latino born, and raised in Puerto Rico. What was very interesting to me was that Mirta did not speak English. I am sure that the only English word she knew was yes. Being a minority, myself I decided to try to help Mirta understand English. Although Mirta did not speak English, she was a great seamstress and always understood what the brides wanted her to do. This was accomplished by gestures from the Brides.
I would take breaks when Davids’s Bridal Salon was not busy and go in the back room where Mirta was working. I would face Mirta and give her a short sentences to repeat after me. In turn,
