As far as I could remember, I was 8 at the time when I first questioned my mom what I was folding was for. Every year around the same time, the fifteenth day of the seventh moon in the Chinese calendar, my mom would ask my sisters and me to fold some paper to burn later in the ceremony. The paper my mom called them “Hell Money”. It is called “Hell Money” because after it is burned in a metal pot the paper money is said to turn into money the ghosts in hell could spend. My mom had said that in order for the family to be blessed we have to take care of the ghosts that are not taken care of so they could take care of us.
