During the period between 1913 and 1915, more than one million bones from animals such as mastodons, mammoths, North American lions, and saber-toothed cats were excavated in as many as one hundred tar pits. Some of these tar pits were buried beneath ponds and other structures. At this time, the bone seekers favored large, complete bones, but often didn't document information about the location and direction of those bones within the remains.
