Sept. 6, 1901 anarchist Leon Czolgosz shot President William McKinley twice in the abdomen at point-blank range. At the time the president was standing in a receiving line at the Temple of Music at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y. Shortly after the shooting it had appeared that President McKinley might have been recovering. However, he died on Sept. 14, 1901 of gangrene. After his death, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th President to serve office at age 42.
