Sophocles's play Oedipus the king, like many Greek tragedies, is not only entertaining but has an additional purpose. This purpose is to teach the audience the important values of ancient Greece. One of these values is Heroism. "You can not equal the gods, your children know that, bending at your alter. But we do rate you first of men" (989).Oedipus is highly revered in the eyes of the people of Thebes but what makes Oedipus first of men in the eyes of a Greek audience.
