In the F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby the reader is given their first close examination of Jay Gatsby in chapter three. This is the first time that the narrator, Nick Carrraway is introduced to Gatsby. However Gatsby is shown to be quite infamous to the reader even before he is given a speaking role through the many circulating rumors that were being spread throughout New York. When they first meet at Gatsby’s party Nick didn’t realize that the man he was speaking with about the war was in fact Jay Gatsby. Upon realizing this, Gatsby simply smiled at Nick. Nick described this smile to the reader.
