The pivotal word, Harlem, to go beyond mere definition but to explore the implied meanings of the black neighborhood in New York. There are separate meanings given to the word by each of the individual authors, Baldwin and Hughes. It is funny how both used the same word in context yet have completely different meanings. In Hughes poem “Theme for English B”, Hughes uses the word Harlem to describe his current home, “The steps from the hill that lead down into Harlem” (Hughes np). He also uses Harlem to make a point about diversity in the school.
