Jacob Riis, was born in Ribe Denmark on May 3rd 1849. He worked as a carpenter
in Copenhagen before emigrating to the US in 1870 at the age of 21. Riis lived in New York often spending nights in the police station lodging houses because he didn’t have any money. Jacob Riis preformed a variety of menial jobs before finding work with a news bureau in New York in 1873.
The following year he started working with South Brooklyn News in 1877 Riis became a police reporter from the New York Tribune. Riis focused his opportunity to portray to the public, the hardships of the poor. Riis constantly argued that the “poor were the victims rather than the makers of their fate”.
