Chaim Potok’s character, Asher Lev, is a young man who has been raised on traditional Orthodox Jewish values in Ladover, a Hasidic community. He also, however, has a talent and passion for painting that disagrees with the values of his family and his community. In My Name is Asher Lev, Potok explores the way Asher’s pursuance of his artistic talent estranges him from his family and community. The more he invests himself in art, the more distant his family and community relationships become. This conflict is never truly resolved; rather, it is avoided when Asher is expelled from the community of Ladover.
