Jing-Mei (or June) Woo is the first narrator in the novel. She is the daughter of Suyuan and Canning Woo, who immigrated to America from China. June was born San Francisco and is now in her mid-twenties. Her mother has recently died. At first she is frustrated because she feels that she never really knew her mother, but throughout the novel she discovers that she knows quite a bit about her. June describes the stories that her mother told her from her days in China to be somewhat inaccurate, because the endings were always changing.
